New Delhi, Oct 7 (NationPress) The climate in the national capital underwent a significant transformation on Tuesday as intense rainfall and strong winds battered various regions of Delhi and its neighboring areas.
While the showers provided a respite from the persistent heat, they also led to disruption in flight operations.
Intermittent downpours began in the early morning and persisted throughout the day. Following a brief pause in the afternoon, ominous clouds once again blanketed the city, resulting in a heavy downpour along with powerful winds in multiple locations, including central and southern Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously forecasted rain for the day and issued yellow and orange alerts, warning residents about moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning in the area.
The IMD indicated that due to the impact of the western disturbance, heavy rainfall was anticipated over Northwest India on Tuesday.
“Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning & gusty winds (with speeds reaching 30-50 km/h) is very likely over Northwest India on October 7,” it added.
The abrupt shift in weather caused traffic congestion and waterlogging in several low-lying regions while temperatures noticeably decreased.
Authorities at Delhi Airport issued an advisory stating that flight operations might be impacted due to the adverse weather conditions.
“Due to the unfavorable weather in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi Airport may face disruptions. Our on-ground teams are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for passengers,” the Delhi airport stated.
Passengers are urged to verify flight details with their respective airlines and consider using the Delhi Metro to access the airport to avoid potential road delays.
The advisory also noted that conditions are favorable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, additional areas of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, as well as Delhi and some regions of Maharashtra within the next 3-4 days.
