New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Delhi Police is currently experiencing a shortfall of more than 9,200 personnel across various ranks, as disclosed by the Ministry of Home Affairs during a session in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. This situation underscores the ongoing staffing challenges faced by the police force in the national capital.
In a formal written response to a query from Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai revealed that as of November 30, 2025, there were 9,248 vacant posts against an authorized strength of 92,044 personnel within the Delhi Police.
The information provided indicates that the vacancies are distributed across various operational and supervisory levels, with the most significant shortages occurring at the levels of constables and subordinate officers. Notably, key leadership positions such as Commissioner of Police, Special Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, and Additional Commissioners are currently filled, indicating that the shortages are mainly in the lower ranks.
According to the MoS, there are 4,591 vacancies for constables out of a sanctioned strength of 50,946. Additionally, the police force is lacking 3,057 head constables, 1,039 sub-inspectors, 300 assistant sub-inspectors, and 108 inspectors.
At the officer level, there are 125 vacant posts for Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), along with 13 posts for Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP/Addl. DCP) and 15 posts designated for the Junior Administrative Grade.
When questioned about the duration of these vacancies and the expected timeline for filling them, the minister explained that vacancies are a “dynamic process” caused by factors such as retirements, promotions, and resignations. He emphasized that the process of filling posts is ongoing.
“The vacancies are regularly reported to the recruiting agencies, and appointments occur following the completion of the recruitment process, which includes a written exam, physical test, and medical examination,” Rai stated in his response.
