DGP-IGP national conference in Tirupati from 4-6 December; Modi, Shah to address
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A national-level conference of Directors General of Police (DGPs) and Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) is scheduled to be held from 4 to 6 December in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to address the gathering, which will bring together over 200 IPS officers from across states and Union Territories.
Key Attendees and Scale of the Event
Beyond DGPs and IGPs, the conference is set to be attended by approximately 200 Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials, representatives from state and central security forces, the National Security Advisor (NSA), and senior officials from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Prime Minister Modi is reportedly likely to be present for the first two days of the three-day conference.
Andhra Pradesh Gears Up for Preparations
Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad chaired a meeting of the Inter-Departmental Coordination Committee at the state Secretariat on Monday to assess and direct arrangements for the high-profile event. He issued department-specific instructions to officials, urging them to begin preparations immediately and remain closely engaged in the lead-up to the conference.
Sai Prasad also directed that beautification work across Tirupati city be carried out meticulously, and instructed the IT department to install a dedicated network tower at the IISER venue to ensure seamless connectivity throughout the proceedings.
Coordination Mechanism Put in Place
DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, who participated in the coordination meeting virtually, recommended that a follow-up coordination committee meeting be convened every 15 days in the run-up to the December conference. He stressed the need for full engagement from all senior committee members.
The meeting was also attended by Additional DGP Madhusudan Reddy, Principal Secretary (Home) Kumar Vishwajeet, Principal Secretary (General Administration) J. Syamala Rao, Commissioner (Secondary Health) Chakradhar Babu, SIB Deputy Director Ambika, and IG Kanti Rana Tata, among others.
Significance of the Annual DGP-IGP Conference
The annual DGP-IGP conference is among India's most significant policing conclaves, historically used by the Prime Minister and Home Minister to set national security priorities and review law enforcement challenges. Hosting the event in Tirupati marks a departure from its traditional venue in the national capital, placing Andhra Pradesh at the centre of a major security-policy gathering. With the conference barely six weeks away, state authorities are now under pressure to deliver on logistics, security, and protocol arrangements at scale.
