Many community members have opted to install solar panels on their rooftops, leading to a significant reduction in their soaring electricity bills.
The program facilitates the installation of solar panels on homes to encourage the use of clean energy while simultaneously lowering household energy expenses.
This initiative has not only alleviated the burden of high bills but has also made a notable impact on environmental conservation.
One beneficiary, Lokesh Kumar Sahu, expressed that this scheme has been a true blessing for people like him.
In an interview with IANS, he shared that he has equipped his rooftop with a two-kilowatt solar panel, resulting in a drastic reduction of his electricity bill to nearly zero. He received a subsidy of Rs 60,000 from the Central Government and Rs 30,000 from the state government for the installation.
Lokesh Sahu previously faced monthly electricity costs ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200, which have now dropped to zero.
Moreover, the surplus electricity generated from his solar panels is fed back into the grid, creating opportunities for additional income.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana stands as the largest domestic rooftop solar initiative globally. Its goal is to revolutionize the nation's energy landscape by empowering around one crore households to achieve self-sufficiency in solar energy production by March 2027.
By October 2025, the scheme aims to facilitate the installation of over 20 lakh solar panels, reaching 40 lakh by March 2026, and ultimately achieving one crore by March 2027.
This transformative initiative was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024.
