Key Takeaways
Mumbai, January 27 (NationPress) - Renowned director Ramesh Sippy and actress Hema Malini have recounted intriguing tales from the filming of Sholay. They revealed that Dharmendra once trekked nearly 50 kilometers from his hotel to the set and creatively mixed vodka with coconut water to elevate his spirits.
The duo was attending the launch of a magazine cover celebrating Sholay's 50th anniversary.
Sharing the story, Ramesh Sippy mentioned to IANS, “One morning, Dharmendra resolved to walk from the hotel to the shooting site, which was about 50 kilometers away. He began his journey around 2 or 3 AM, took a short break, and reached the location by 7 AM. After resting for an hour, he was ready for the shoot. His determination was astounding.”
Hema Malini chimed in, “He would walk countless miles.”
Sippy further emphasized Dharmendra's playful side, stating, “That was one aspect of Dharmendra. Another was his light-hearted nature. Occasionally, he would add a splash of vodka to coconut water, accompanied by a cheeky wink. It gave him a unique energy.”
He went on to describe Dharmendra’s character, saying, “He possessed a childlike innocence that frequently shone through, only to transform into a serious demeanor in mere moments. That quality was incredibly charming. He could get upset but would revert to his jovial self almost instantly.”
For those unaware, Dharmendra portrayed Veeru in the legendary film Sholay, released in 1975.
The movie became a cult classic and is hailed as one of the greatest films in Indian cinema.
Alongside Dharmendra, the film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, AK Hangal, Sachin Pilgaonkar, and many others.
