Kolkata, March 20 (NationPress) Senior physician Subarna Goswami, who emerged as a prominent figure in the campaign by the medical community against the tragic incident of R.G. Kar involving rape and murder last August, has been reassigned to a position in Darjeeling—and notably, to a lower-ranked role.

Goswami's new position is one rank beneath his current role. According to the announcement from the state Health & Family Welfare Department, Goswami, who is presently the deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH)-II for the East Burdwan district, will now serve as the Superintendent of the Darjeeling TB Hospital.

In response to this change, Goswami expressed that, as a government employee, he must accept any transfer; however, the nature of this transition indicates it was a retaliatory decision.

“My new position is a rank lower than my existing one. Additionally, the facility in Darjeeling has minimal operational capacity, with very few patients admitted. This marks my eighth transfer under the current Trinamool Congress administration. Out of those eight, five have involved changes within the same rank,” he stated.

Moreover, he emphasized that this transfer would not diminish his determination to advocate for the R.G. Kar cause.

“I will persist in my efforts. It’s not just me; many others who led the charge on the R.G. Kar issue are facing similar targeting. I have encountered police inquiries during the peak of the movement. I am unafraid,” Goswami asserted.

Both Goswami and Kunal Sarkar, two esteemed senior physicians from the state, were summoned to the Kolkata Police headquarters last year during the height of the movement and were interrogated by the then city Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.

Dr. Utpal Banerjee from the Joint Platform of Doctors stated that this transfer is viewed as a blatant act of vendetta, prompting the forum to strongly denounce it and call for the immediate reversal of this decision.
