Kolkata, Oct 17 (NationPress) The emergency medical officer at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Tapas Pramanik, who emerged as a prominent figure in the movement addressing the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, has submitted his resignation from health services.
Pramanik is the second individual associated with the R.G. Kar movement to resign this week.
Earlier, Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of R.G. Kar, known for his whistle-blowing regarding financial misconduct at the esteemed medical institution, also resigned.
Ali stated that he resigned from his position at the Kaliyaganj State General Hospital in Malda district, West Bengal, after facing ongoing administrative retaliation for voicing his concerns about financial irregularities within R.G. Kar and the broader healthcare system in the state.
In his resignation letter dated October 15, 2025, which is accessible to IANS, Pramanik indicated that his choice to resign stemmed from “persistent administrative failures and intolerable working conditions.”
He expressed frustration that his repeated requests for specialist doctors from the medicine and chest departments to assist in the emergency wing, particularly during night shifts, have been disregarded by R.G. Kar authorities. Consequently, he has relied heavily on house staff and interns to manage this critical area.
“It has become unmanageable, a situation that has persisted for over a year. The ongoing administrative shortcomings and excessive workload have severely impacted my health and well-being,” Pramanik's resignation letter stated.
Following his resignation, Akhtar Ali articulated his feelings of helplessness to the media, explaining that he had reached the end of his struggle against a corrupt system. “I have decided to resign from my services but will continue to fight against the corrupt healthcare system in the state,” he remarked.
To recall, last year, based on Ali's petition, the Calcutta High Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the multi-crore R.G. Kar financial irregularities case. The CBI has arrested several individuals, including the former controversial principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, who are currently in judicial custody.
