Kolkata, Oct 14 (NationPress) Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who is widely recognized as the whistleblower in the ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at this prominent medical institution, has tendered his resignation on Monday.
His petition was instrumental in prompting the Calcutta High Court last year to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the multi-crore financial discrepancies at R.G. Kar. As a result, CBI officials apprehended the former and controversial principal, Sandip Ghosh, along with others linked to these financial violations, all of whom remain in judicial custody.
At the time of this report, the state health department had not confirmed whether his resignation was accepted.
Ali was serving as the deputy superintendent of Kaliyaganj State General Hospital in Malda district of West Bengal. In statements to the media on Tuesday, he expressed that he has faced vendetta from the state government ever since he voiced concerns about financial misconduct not only in R.G. Kar but across the entire state healthcare system.
“I have reached the limit of my battle against the corrupt system. Therefore, I have decided to resign from my services. However, I will persist in my fight against the corrupt healthcare system in the state,” he stated.
Meanwhile, political speculation is swirling around the possibility that Ali may join the BJP and could potentially be a candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal next year. This speculation follows his visit to the BJP state headquarters in Kolkata last week, where he met the party's state president and Lok Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya.
However, Ali has not clarified his intentions regarding this matter.
Prior to filing his petition at the Calcutta High Court, Ali had been outspoken about the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar. He approached the State Vigilance Commission with his complaints, naming Sandip Ghosh as the orchestrator of the financial misconduct.
When the state government failed to take action on his complaints, Ali ultimately sought relief from the Calcutta High Court. A substantial segment of the medical community has alleged that the financial discrepancies at R.G. Kar are part of a larger conspiracy linked to the horrific rape and murder of a female junior doctor on the hospital premises in August last year.
