Will the CBI Press Charges Against Whistle-Blower Akhtar Ali on February 25?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The whistle-blower regarding the financial misconduct at RG Kar, Akhtar Ali, finds himself facing additional legal challenges as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) prepares to officially frame charges against him.
The CBI submitted a request to the Alipore CBI court on Tuesday, which has granted permission for the agency to proceed with framing charges.
According to the CBI, the formal charges against Akhtar Ali are set to be established on February 25.
The court has mandated that Akhtar Ali must be present on that date.
In a related development, although the investigation was reportedly concluded verbally, the supplementary charge sheet filed in the RG Kar financial corruption case suggests that further inquiries might be pursued in the near future, if deemed necessary.
The CBI is also awaiting a forensic report pertinent to this case.
It is significant to mention that amid the sensational coverage of the horrific rape and murder of a junior trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali had initiated a case alleging financial malpractice.
A petition was filed against the then-principal, Sandip Ghosh, requesting an investigation by both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Subsequently, the CBI and the ED took charge of the investigation by the court's directive.
Sandip Ghosh was subsequently arrested as part of the investigation.
Several businessmen associated with Sandip Ghosh were also taken into custody.
Upon concluding their investigation, the CBI alleged that Akhtar was implicated in the financial scam as well. Following this, the agency filed a charge sheet against him, claiming that Akhtar had been summoned multiple times for questioning but failed to appear.
Moreover, the CBI contended in court that Akhtar was attempting to secure anticipatory bail in the Calcutta High Court under the guise of health issues.
Ultimately, Akhtar Ali was instructed to surrender and complied with the order, being sent to judicial custody until February 17.
At the conclusion of that period, Akhtar was brought before the court again on Tuesday.
Although Akhtar Ali did not seek bail during Tuesday's hearing, the court approved the CBI's request to frame charges against him.
Reports indicate that charges will also be framed against Shashikant Chandak alongside Akhtar Ali on February 25.
Additionally, page 29 of the supplementary charge sheet filed by the CBI suggests that the investigation will continue to progress in the days ahead.
