Why Has a Special CBI Court in Kolkata Issued an Arrest Warrant Against Whistleblower Akhtar Ali?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Kolkata has issued an arrest warrant for Akhtar Ali, the initial whistleblower in the multi-crore financial misconduct scandal involving the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. This institution is also notorious for the heinous rape and murder of a junior doctor that occurred within its premises in August 2024.
Ali, who previously held the position of Deputy Superintendent at R.G. Kar, was the first to alert authorities about former principal Sandip Ghosh’s alleged involvement in the financial irregularities at the medical facility.
His petition led to a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court mandating a CBI investigation into these financial discrepancies. Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated a parallel inquiry.
However, Ali's reputation as a whistleblower suffered a blow when the CBI submitted a supplementary chargesheet in December of the previous year, naming him as a co-accused.
Following that, Ali failed to appear in court multiple times, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant against him on Friday.
During the court session, Ali's attorney argued that his absence was due to ongoing medical treatment. Nonetheless, the court was not convinced and sided with the CBI's assertion that Ali was exploiting his health condition to evade court appearances.
Last year, Ali attempted to resign from his position, but the West Bengal Health Department suspended him instead, citing that his involvement had emerged during the CBI's investigation into the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar.
As the Assistant Superintendent, Ali was responsible for overseeing the procurement of essential hospital equipment, and later, as Deputy Superintendent, he allegedly leveraged this role for personal gain, according to the Health Department.
Reports indicate that Ali demanded substantial sums of money in exchange for facilitating business deals with companies supplying medical equipment. Between 2020 and 2022, a total of Rs 2,39,000 was deposited into Ali's account, along with Rs 50,000 credited to his wife’s account.
