Why Did Former RG Kar Official Akhtar Ali Fail to Surrender Before Court?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 9 (NationPress) Just days after declaring his intention to surrender to the Special CBI Court, Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, failed to appear in court on Monday.
Even after the designated time of 11:00 a.m., he was noticeably absent.
During this time, CBI officials and attorneys waited for Ali at the court, yet he did not show up. Following his absence on Monday, uncertainty surrounds whether he will surrender on Tuesday.
With the surrender deadline passing without his appearance, questions have arisen regarding the future direction of the case.
On Saturday, Ali had attended the same court, just a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation issued an arrest warrant against him. Unfortunately, he could not surrender that day as the court closed at 12:30 p.m..
Remarkably, Ali did not bring his lawyer along, even though he traveled from the hospital to court on Saturday. He also failed to notify the court in advance. He had guaranteed that he would surrender on Monday.
"I am still unwell. I was in the hospital. I didn't have my mobile. Therefore, I was unaware that the court would be closed today. I arrived. But unfortunately, the court instructed me to surrender on Monday. I'll act accordingly. If I'm in trouble, they will arrest me. If they take me to court, then that will happen," he expressed.
A special CBI court issued an arrest warrant against Akhtar Ali on Friday, who was the initial whistle-blower in the multi-crore financial irregularities case at R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital, also notorious for the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital in August 2024.
Ali, the ex-Deputy Superintendent, was the first to highlight the involvement of the controversial former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, in the financial misconduct case at the state-run medical institution.
His petition led a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court to order a CBI investigation into the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar. Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated a parallel investigation into the matter.
