BJP Challenges Trinamool's Nomination of Menaka Guruswamy for Rajya Sabha

Kolkata, Feb 28 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell Chief and the central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, expressed skepticism on Saturday regarding the Trinamool Congress' decision to nominate Menaka Guruswamy for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections in the state.
In a post on X, Malviya asserted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has acknowledged Guruswamy for representing the former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in the notorious RG Kar rape and murder case.
“Mamata Banerjee has chosen a non-Bengali, Menaka Guruswamy, for a Rajya Sabha seat. This decision raises eyebrows. She had defended Goyal in a case that deeply disturbed Bengal’s collective conscience—the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident,” he remarked.
Malviya further indicated that Guruswamy's selection sends an inappropriate message to the populace, who were profoundly affected by the RG Kar protests.
“Concerns were raised about the handling of the investigation. The public disclosure of the victim's identity sparked widespread outrage. Junior doctors and significant segments of the medical community demanded accountability and transparency. Trust in the system has been severely compromised. At such a critical time, this nomination is far from reassuring,” Malviya elaborated.
Reflecting on the tragic RG Kar case, the BJP leader stated, “Citizens across Bengal should take a moment to consider the unimaginable grief endured by the victim's middle-class parents, who invested their life savings in their child's education, only to see her life brutally cut short.”
Malviya added, “For the protesting doctors and the broader medical community pursuing justice for their colleague, this choice will not bring closure but will instead serve as a provocation. In public perception, the impression matters, and this one is unlikely to dissipate soon.”
On Friday night, the Trinamool Congress unveiled its candidates for the vacant Rajya Sabha positions in West Bengal, featuring unexpected choices.
Among the four candidates was the senior Supreme Court advocate, Menaka Guruswamy, who previously represented Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the legal proceedings concerning the controversies surrounding the Enforcement Directorate's recent raid at the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office and the residence of I-PAC founder, Pratik Jain.
