Major Drug Bust: DRI Uncovers Alprazolam Production Hub in Andhra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 13 (NationPress) In a major operation targeting the illegal production of synthetic drugs, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered a hidden facility in Andhra Pradesh that was producing Alprazolam, a controlled substance under the NDPS Act of 1985.
The raid took place at a factory located in the Kondapalli Industrial Development Area of NTR district, where authorities confiscated 237 kg of drugs valued at approximately Rs 47 crore.
Additionally, 3.5 tonnes of chemicals were seized, and two individuals were taken into custody.
Executed under the operation code-named “Operation White Hammer” on March 11-12, this intelligence-led and meticulously coordinated initiative unveiled a fully operational industrial setup disguised as a chemical manufacturing unit.
Searches conducted at the site led to the confiscation of 237 kg of Alprazolam, along with over 800 kg of essential raw materials, 2860 litres of various chemicals, and large-scale industrial equipment such as reactors, dryers, and a centrifuge, showcasing the scale of the clandestine manufacturing operation, as noted in the DRI's statement.
Initial investigations indicated that the scheme was masterminded by a chemist with more than 20 years of experience in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields, collaborating with an associate responsible for sourcing raw materials and distribution in Hyderabad.
The suspects had leased the factory premises specifically for the covert manufacture of Alprazolam. Both individuals have been arrested.
This financial year, the DRI has dismantled eight clandestine drug manufacturing operations through intelligence-driven actions, reaffirming its strong commitment to the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and to protecting society from the threats posed by narcotic and psychotropic substances.
In a related incident, Hyderabad police apprehended four drug dealers and seized 3.2 kg of Ganja.
Acting on a tip-off, the Commissioner’s Task Force, along with teams from the Charminar Zone, detained two interstate ganja traffickers and two local dealers who were engaged in the transport and sale of dry ganja, resulting in the recovery of 3.2 kg of the substance.
