New Delhi, Oct 19 (NationPress) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) dismantled an illegal laboratory producing the psychotropic drug Alprazolam, confiscating contraband valued at Rs 3.44 crore and apprehending an engineer alongside a former member of the Indian Red Cross Society, as reported by an official on Sunday.
The individuals detained during the operation on Saturday were identified as Roop Singh Chauhan, 51, a B. Tech graduate from Shri Vaishnav Institute of Management and Science, Indore, and Abhijeet Singh Chauhan, 39, a B. Pharma graduate from Rishiraj College of Pharmacy, Indore, previously affiliated with the Indian Red Cross Society in Ratlam, according to the NCB.
The Indore Zonal Unit of the agency disclosed that following a tip-off, their teams conducted extensive surveillance on the suspected site near the IPCA Laboratory, located at Gram-Sejawata, Mhow-Neemuch Road, Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, monitoring the activities of traffickers.
This operation resulted in the confiscation of 13.762 kilograms of Alprazolam, estimated to be worth around Rs 3.44 crore in the illicit market.
Regulated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Alprazolam is a controlled medication often misused for recreational purposes. It has also been implicated in the adulteration of toddy in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as well as heroin in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and neighboring regions, which boosts profit margins, as stated.
The NCB further indicated that along with the narcotic substance, they seized laboratory equipment utilized in the secret manufacturing process, including round-bottom flasks, oil baths, condensers, stirrers, and thermometers. A considerable amount of precursor chemicals and solvents was also retrieved from the premises.
The agency noted that the accused, Abhijeet Chauhan and Roop Singh Chauhan, had partnered in ventures related to pharmaceutical and Ayurvedic products.
“Initial investigations have shown that both individuals leveraged their pharmaceutical knowledge and facilities to illegally produce Alprazolam, a psychotropic substance under the NDPS Act, disregarding legal regulations,” the statement elaborated.
The NCB reported that they had rented the warehouse situated on Mhow-Neemuch Road (State Highway-31) for the production of Alprazolam starting in January 2025.
