New Delhi, Aug 9 (NationPress) In a significant achievement against drug trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Crime Branch, Delhi Police, has dismantled a drug cartel engaged in distributing the psychotropic substance Alprazolam. Two suspects have been apprehended, and over nine kilograms of tablets, estimated to be worth about Rs 1 crore in the international market, have been seized.
Following directives from Delhi's Lt. Governor aimed at creating a drug-free capital, ANTF operatives gathered intelligence on local drug traffickers.
On July 28, a tip-off about a shipment near Dilshad Garden Metro Station prompted a trap at the Apsara Border–Anand Vihar ISBT Flyover. The operation, led by Inspector Praveen Rathi and supervised by ACP Rajkumar, resulted in the arrest of Nishant Pal (23), a resident of Girdhar Enclave, Sahibabad, who was riding a motorcycle (UP14EZ3166).
After adhering to NDPS Act protocols, officers discovered 6.24 kg of Alprazolam tablets — nearly 60,000 pills — concealed in a khaki carton he was transporting.
An FIR (No. 194/2025) was filed under Sections 22(c) and 25 of the NDPS Act at PS Crime Branch. Further inquiry and the suspect's revelations led to the apprehension of Ajay Kumar (23) of Ashok Vatika, Sahibabad, on August 7.
A follow-up raid on his warehouse in Rajender Nagar, Ghaziabad, yielded an extra 3 kg of Alprazolam tablets. The police emphasized the enormity of the seizure, noting that the NDPS Act classifies commercial quantities of Alprazolam as anything over 100 grams.
Reportedly, both suspects have medical backgrounds — Nishant previously worked in a pharmacy, while Ajay served as a medical representative. Their pharmaceutical expertise allowed them to distribute the tablets without prescriptions or invoices across Delhi-NCR, charging a premium for each delivery.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and capture other members of the syndicate.
