Security Forces Engage Drone in J&K's Poonch Sector
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu, Feb 27 (NationPress) A drone was spotted moving along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector of J&K on Friday, prompting security forces to respond with gunfire, as per official reports.
Officials noted that the drone was detected over Gulpur village in the Poonch sector.
"The drone's movement was identified during routine surveillance conducted by security personnel. Shots were fired at the drone, which was seen heading towards Siriyan village, crossing into the Pakistani territory of the LoC," an official detailed.
In previous instances, drones have been utilized by terrorist organizations, with support from the Pakistani Army, to transport arms, ammunition, cash, and drugs to aid terrorists along the LoC and international border in J&K.
Typically, these deliveries are retrieved by the overground workers (OGWs) associated with these terrorist groups.
The Indian Army, responsible for securing the 740-km stretch of the LoC, along with the Border Security Force (BSF) tasked with the 240-km international border, have deployed specialized anti-drone technology to counter this threat.
Within the Union Territory, the LoC runs through the districts of Kupwara, Baramulla, and Bandipora in the Valley, and through Poonch, Rajouri, and parts of the Jammu district in the Jammu division.
The international border is located in the districts of Samba, Kathua, and Jammu within the Jammu division.
The Army's presence along the LoC aims to prevent infiltration, cross-border smuggling, and unauthorized drone activities originating from the other side.
On the international border, these responsibilities fall to the BSF.
In the interior regions, the J&K Police and security forces are actively conducting operations against terrorists, their OGWs, and sympathizers.
Additionally, the security forces are targeting drug traffickers, peddlers, and those involved in hawala money laundering, as it is believed that the proceeds from these illicit activities are funneled into sustaining terrorism in J&K.
