Chennai, Jan 18 (IANS) A dry spell is anticipated to dominate Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next four days, as the Northeast monsoon is poised to retreat from the area soon, based on the recent weather forecast released on Sunday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted that the northeast monsoon will likely pull back from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and surrounding regions of south India within the next 48 hours.
Currently, a lower atmospheric circulation is observed over the Comorin Sea; however, it is not expected to lead to extensive rainfall immediately.
From January 18 to January 20, dry weather is expected to persist across the state and its neighboring regions. During this timeframe, light fog may develop in isolated areas during early morning hours, particularly in inland and low-lying zones.
Similar dry conditions are forecasted to continue on January 21 and January 22, with no significant rainfall expected across most districts.
A slight shift in weather patterns is predicted for January 23. On that date, light to moderate rainfall may occur at one or two locations along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, while interior districts are likely to remain largely dry.
On January 24, light to moderate rain is anticipated in isolated areas across Tamil Nadu, reaching Puducherry and Karaikal, but widespread rainfall is not expected.
Regarding temperatures, minimum temperatures are projected to show little variation between January 18 and January 20, remaining near normal or slightly below normal throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Daytime temperatures are also expected to remain pleasant for this time of year. For Chennai and its suburbs, the weather on January 18 and January 19 is forecasted to be partly cloudy, with light fog likely in some areas during the early morning.
The maximum temperature is expected to be between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 19 to 20 degrees Celsius.
In addition, strong surface winds are forecast to impact the southern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea on January 18. Wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 55 kmph, are anticipated.
Given these conditions, fishermen are advised against venturing into these waters during this period. Overall, the upcoming days are expected to remain largely dry, with only brief and isolated rainfall activity likely toward the end of the week.
