Chennai, Jan 4 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted rainfall in various regions of Tamil Nadu from Sunday through January 9, as the state continues to recover from a series of weather-related challenges faced in recent weeks.

Officials from the India Meteorological Department reported that scattered rain was observed across multiple locations in Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal area over the past 24 hours.

Data collected until 8:30 a.m. revealed that Nalumukku in the Tirunelveli district received 5 cm of rain, marking the highest rainfall in the state during that time frame.

Meteorologists have linked the anticipated rainfall to ongoing atmospheric conditions over nearby seas.

Currently, a low-level atmospheric trough is present over the southeast Arabian Sea, near the southern coast of Kerala.

Moreover, an upper-air cyclonic circulation remains active over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent southwest Bay regions. These factors are likely to induce intermittent light rain across certain areas of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days. Similar weather patterns are expected in Puducherry and Karaikal as well.

In addition to rainfall, a significant decline in night temperatures is anticipated.

The IMD has cautioned that minimum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may gradually decrease by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in certain locations until January 7, potentially resulting in cooler early mornings than usual for this season.

This latest forecast comes during a challenging weather phase for Tamil Nadu over the past few months.

Many districts previously experienced heavy rainfall events associated with cyclonic systems and northeast monsoon activity, causing urban waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, and crop damage in parts of the delta and southern regions.

Cities like Chennai, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi faced traffic disruptions and drainage overflow during heavy rain, while farmers in rural areas reported losses due to unseasonable precipitation.

While the current forecast indicates only light rain, authorities have urged residents in at-risk areas to exercise caution, especially during early mornings and late evenings when temperatures may drop further.

Fishermen are also encouraged to stay updated with official advisories, as sea conditions may fluctuate with the movement of atmospheric systems.

Weather officials stated they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updated forecasts and warnings as necessary, based on the intensity and movement of prevailing systems.
