Did Mahi Bhai’s Advice Change Dube’s Game After His Stellar Performance Against the Netherlands?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 19 (NationPress) Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube attributed his enhanced batting strategy to the wisdom of former captain MS Dhoni after his impressive 67-run performance against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.
Dube acknowledged that he faced challenges against fast bowlers in the early stages of his career, but Dhoni's guidance on strike rotation and maintaining a smart approach has greatly refined his skills under pressure.
“When I first entered the IPL, I struggled with pace and couldn’t connect well with the ball. I understood that to excel at this level, I had to improve my game. I dedicated time in the off-season to work on this. Mahi bhai advised me that hitting sixes isn’t always essential; finding boundaries and rotating the strike is equally crucial.
“This clarity has been beneficial. If I receive a good delivery, I aim for a boundary or to rotate the strike. In the death overs, I’ll naturally ramp up my aggression, but my initial focus is on playing with intelligent intent,” Dube shared with Jio Hotstar.
Discussing handling pressure, Dube highlighted the necessity of batting deep and adjusting his play to meet the team's needs.
“I don't succumb to pressure; I concentrate on the situation. If wickets fall, my role is to bat longer. If I can stay until the end, I can secure 10–15 vital runs in the final overs. I steer clear of unnecessary risks during the middle overs. If stability is required, I rotate the strike. When the platform is established, I’m geared up to attack from the outset,” he explained.
Dube entered the crease during a challenging phase for India, with the team struggling at 69-3 after nine overs. He salvaged the innings with a remarkable 66 runs off just 31 balls.
He also excelled with the ball, taking two wickets while conceding 35 runs in three overs. Due to his all-around performance, he was named the player of the match.
