ECI Unveils Bye-Election for Bhojpur-Cum-Buxar MLC Seat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, April 9 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially declared a bye-election for the Bihar Legislative Council pertaining to the Bhojpur-cum-Buxar Local Authorities’ Constituency.
This bye-election arises due to a casual vacancy created by the resignation of JD(U) leader Radha Charan Sah.
Sah previously secured victory in the Bihar Assembly elections from the Sandesh Assembly constituency in 2025.
In 2023, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) related to a money laundering investigation, which has heightened both political and legal examination of his actions.
As stated by Rajesh Kumar Singh, Under Secretary at the Election Commission, the Model Code of Conduct is now in effect within the constituency.
The timeline for the election includes an official notification on April 16, with nominations due by April 23. The nomination scrutiny will occur on April 24, and candidates can withdraw until April 27.
Voting is set for May 12, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with vote counting scheduled for May 14, culminating the election process on May 15.
Radha Charan Sah originates from the Barhara block of Bhojpur district, with a story that exemplifies a significant journey from modest beginnings. In the early 1970s, his family operated a small 'jalebi' shop close to the Arrah railway station, where he assisted his father. Gradually, he ventured into various businesses, starting with a hotel and expanding into real estate, rice mills, cold storage, and hospitality.
He possesses numerous properties in Arrah, including locations at Ramna Maidan and Shaheed Bhawan, as well as a resort along the Bypass Road. His business operations also reach states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Additionally, Sah has carved out a notable niche in the sand trading industry along the Son River in Bhojpur.
In contrast to typical industry players, he has reportedly utilized strategic networking and a low-profile strategy to solidify his business standing. His sand trading activities have drawn the attention of the ED.
The forthcoming bye-election is anticipated to attract considerable political focus, reflecting the shifting dynamics of Bihar’s political environment.
