ED Provisions Attach Anil Ambani's Luxury Rs 3,716 Crore Mumbai Residence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, February 25 (IANS) – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally seized the luxurious Pali Hill estate known as ‘Abode,’ valued at Rs 3,716.83 crore, owned by Anil Ambani, in connection with the bank fraud case involving Reliance Communications Ltd, as per an official announcement made on Wednesday.
The ED, through its Special Task Force Headquarters, has executed this provisional attachment under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).
Previously, a portion of this property was attached for Rs 473.17 crore, according to the financial investigative agency's statement.
This recent action raises the total value of properties linked to the Anil Ambani Group that have been attached to over Rs 15,700 crore, as indicated in the statement.
The ED's investigation was initiated following the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) FIR, which charged M/s Reliance Communications Ltd (RCOM), Anil Ambani, and others under sections 120-B, 406, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, as well as section 13(2) along with section 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1989.
RCOM and its affiliated entities have borrowed a staggering Rs 40,185 crore from both domestic and international lenders, of which a significant amount remains unpaid.
The investigation has disclosed that the Pali Hill property has been consolidated into the RiseE Trust, a Private Family Trust belonging to Anil Ambani's family, ostensibly to obscure his ownership.
This reorganization appears designed to facilitate wealth preservation and resource generation through the aggregation of assets in the RiseE trust, thereby protecting it from Anil Ambani's personal liabilities stemming from guarantees he provided to the lending banks for RCOM's loans. The property is meant to be beneficially utilized and owned by the Ambani family, rather than being diverted to the public banks burdened by non-performing assets, as mentioned in the statement.
Ongoing investigations into this matter are still underway, as stated.
