Wild Elephant Strays Into Ranchi Neighborhood, Claims One Life
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, March 2 (NationPress) A tragic incident unfolded on Monday when a wild elephant wandered into a residential neighborhood within the jurisdiction of the Ratu police station, located on the outskirts of Ranchi, resulting in the death of a man. This unfortunate event has instilled fear among residents in the surrounding areas.
The attack took place in Pali village, where the elephant targeted and fatally harmed Subodh Khalkho.
Witnesses reported that the elephant was initially spotted early in the morning near Chittarkota Patra village before it made its way to Pali, both of which are heavily populated.
This incident marks the second occurrence in just four days where an elephant has intruded into residential spaces in the state capital.
Local residents noted that the same elephant had ventured into the Ranchi-Hatia region the previous Friday, where it roamed through streets and neighborhoods for nearly four hours before retreating.
Officials from the Forest Department have stated that they are closely tracking the movements of the elephant. Teams have been dispatched to the impacted areas, and measures are being taken to gently guide the animal back to its natural habitat.
As a precautionary step, local villagers are advised to remain indoors, ensuring the safety of children and elderly family members, and to maintain a safe distance from the elephant.
Authorities have also cautioned residents against attempting to chase or provoke the elephant.
Repeated incidents of wild elephants entering Ranchi and nearby regions have been reported in recent years, underscoring the escalating issue of human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand.
In June 2024, an elephant was sighted near the Jharkhand Assembly complex in Kute, just outside the city. Previously, two elephants had entered an abandoned cold storage facility in the Ratu area. In January 2013, an elephant caused a stir by straying into the Deepatoli Army Cantonment area.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has voiced his concerns regarding the rising frequency of these incidents, convening a review meeting with Forest Department officials to formulate effective long-term strategies aimed at preventing such intrusions into residential areas.
Official estimates indicate that approximately 27 individuals have lost their lives in elephant attacks across various districts in Jharkhand over the past few months alone.
