Raipur, April 1 (NationPress) Two individuals tragically lost their lives in distinct incidents involving wild elephant attacks in the Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh, as reported by officials.
The incidents occurred on Monday evening across different villages under the jurisdiction of the Ramanujganj police station.
The police reported that in Chhatwa-Fulwar village, late Monday night, a couple faced severe injuries when the woman tried to protect her husband from an assault by a herd of elephants. The officer in charge of Ramanujganj police station, Ramakant Tiwari, confirmed the details and informed IANS that the woman, named Asmina (40), sustained critical injuries and unfortunately passed away during treatment on Tuesday morning.
Her husband, Usman (45), is currently in serious condition, according to the police report.
The elephants initially attacked the woman, resulting in the loss of one of her hands, leaving her and her husband critically injured. They were both taken to the Community Health Center for initial care, but she could not survive.
The local residents, outraged by her death and the ongoing incidents of elephant attacks, organized a Chakka Jam on the Chhattisgarh-Jharkhand road, holding forest officials accountable for their negligence.
“The situation is under control, but human-elephant conflicts are prevalent in this region,” the police officer added.
In another incident on the same night in Rampur village, a man named Durga Prasad (50) was killed after being attacked by a herd of elephants. This incident also occurred within the area of the Ramanujganj police station.
The Balrampur district borders the dense forests of Jharkhand, which are home to numerous elephants that frequently traverse both states. The natural boundary is formed by the Kanhar River.
Last year, a wild elephant killed a man named Chamra Ram (60) in the Rajpur area of Balrampur district. Chamra Ram encountered a herd of eight elephants near his residence adjacent to the Chilma Forest Range. The elephants trampled him, resulting in his instant death, while his family narrowly escaped by fleeing the area. This incident happened as around 35 elephants wandered through the region, with eight separating from the main herd.
