Heroic Rescue: Wild Elephant Saved from Well in Jharkhand
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Khunti (Jharkhand) on March 2, a wild elephant wandered into a residential area and unfortunately fell into an open well located in the Dandtoli (Anigara) zone around noon, sparking a wave of panic among local residents.
Fortunately, the Forest Department successfully rescued the elephant after nearly two hours of meticulous efforts.
Officials reported that the elephant fell into a well owned by Dimba Lohar, a local resident. Upon receiving the alert, teams from the Forest Department and local authorities quickly arrived at the scene to initiate a rescue mission.
Using a JCB machine, the officials skillfully cut and leveled the soil on one side of the well, creating a slope that allowed the elephant to climb out independently.
Once free from the well, the elephant crossed the adjacent national highway at Anigara and headed towards Pokla village.
As news of the incident spread, thousands of onlookers converged at the site, leading to a chaotic scene.
While guiding the elephant to safety was relatively straightforward, managing the large crowd proved to be a significant challenge. Authorities repeatedly requested that spectators keep their distance to avoid any further risk.
The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Khunti noted that the elephant appears to have vision impairment in one eye and possibly diminished sight in the other, which may have led to its confused navigation through the town.
He further mentioned that the animal appeared weak and hungry, having sustained minor injuries from the fall, but it has not shown any aggressive behavior thus far.
Local reports indicate that the elephant initially made its way to Bhoot village via the Bhandra area on Sunday morning. After being pursued by villagers, it retreated to the Patratoli forest but re-entered Datia locality on Monday morning.
The elephant traversed several busy regions, including DAV Road, the Daily Market, Nagar Bhavan, Lobin Garden, Amritpur, the Forest Department checkpoint, and Forest Housing in Khunti.
It crossed Main Road, Bazaar Tand, and Tamar Mor before ultimately falling into the well at Dandtoli in Anigara.
Videos capturing the elephant's journey through the town and the subsequent rescue have gone viral on social media, garnering significant attention.
Forest officials have cautioned the public against crowding and urged them to maintain a safe distance from the animal. They are closely monitoring the elephant and planning its safe relocation back to its natural habitat to avert any future incidents.
