Chennai, Oct 6 (NationPress) AIADMK general secretary and Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) criticized the DMK government on Monday for displaying stark double standards in the handling of a significant kidney trafficking case. He highlighted that despite the Madras High Court's intervention, the government has hesitated to take action, unlike its rapid investigation into the Karur rally stampede that involved actor-politician Vijay.
In a strongly worded statement, EPS asserted that the DMK's selective law enforcement tactics have become evident to the people of Tamil Nadu.
He noted that state health officials have corroborated incidents of kidney trafficking occurring at a private medical college hospital owned by a DMK MLA in Tiruchirappalli's Mannachanallur and another private hospital in Erode district.
According to EPS, the victims of this organ trafficking were impoverished power loom workers from Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district, who were allegedly exploited by organ brokers.
“The Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench condemned the kidney racket as a heinous crime and demanded stringent action against the involved hospitals and brokers. It also ordered the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Prem Anand Sinha. Yet, a month later, the DMK government has yet to initiate the investigation,” he stated.
EPS contrasted this inaction with the extraordinary speed exhibited in the Karur stampede investigation, which claimed the lives of 41 individuals during Vijay's rally on September 27.
“In Karur, immediately after the court issued its order, a police team led by an IG was formed within hours and the investigation commenced right away,” he highlighted.
“This raises the question—why hasn’t the government, led by Stalin, shown the same urgency in the kidney trafficking case? Both cases were addressed by similar Madras High Court orders. Yet, while the government acted swiftly in one instance, it has been sluggish in the other. This exposes the shortcomings of the so-called ‘Stalin model’ of governance,” EPS asserted.
He claimed that the DMK tends to shield its allies while targeting its adversaries.
“The citizens of Tamil Nadu are now acutely aware of the DMK’s hypocrisy—prompt action when it aligns with their political interests, but silence when their own members are implicated,” EPS urged, calling on the government to initiate the SIT investigation without any further delays.
