What Did CM Fadnavis Say About His Friendship with Raj Thackeray?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 8 (NationPress) During the vibrant campaigning for the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared noteworthy insights about his rapport with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray, who has recently joined forces with his cousin, Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena-UBT, after nearly two decades. In a conversation with a local publication, CM Fadnavis highlighted that even though they are competing politically, their personal relationship remains intact.
He stressed the rich political culture of Maharashtra, asserting that political competition does not equate to personal animosity.
"Raj Thackeray and I have a strong friendship. While the election campaign is ongoing, we may critique each other, but we are not foes—just political opponents. After the results on January 16, we’ll meet for tea again," CM Fadnavis remarked.
He further indicated that despite a severe political divide with Uddhav Thackeray, they maintain basic courtesy.
"Even with significant differences with Uddhav Thackeray, we can still share tea when we cross paths. This is part of our political essence," the Chief Minister said.
During the interview, Fadnavis criticized the partnership between Raj Thackeray's MNS and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena-UBT.
He labeled the alliance as the "largest blunder" of the MNS and predicted that it would incur the most significant setbacks in the coalition.
"We (the BJP) and Eknath Shinde are steadfast partners. We have no intention of aiding the MNS in this election," CM Fadnavis stated, reinforcing that the Mahayuti alliance is cohesive and stable in the municipal elections.
The Chief Minister also scrutinized the campaign tactics of both Raj and Uddhav Thackeray, accusing them of intentionally diverting attention from developmental matters.
"They initiate a new issue each morning, ensuring that the day's discussions center around it. They are aware that if the elections focus on development, they won't have adequate responses," Fadnavis claimed.
In closing, CM Fadnavis took a jab at the opposition leadership, alleging that it lacks the "mindset to engage in struggle."
He noted that opposition leaders prefer to remain at home rather than addressing public concerns, resulting in growing frustration among their party members.
