Could Finn Allen Miss Part of NZ's T20I Series Against India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Perth, Dec 10 (NationPress) New Zealand opener Finn Allen might not participate in some matches of the five-game T20I series in India, set for January 2026, due to his upcoming commitments in the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Perth Scorchers.
The T20I series, commencing on January 21 in Nagpur, with subsequent games in Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram, is considered crucial for New Zealand as they prepare for the T20 World Cup slated for February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka.
Prior to this, New Zealand will engage in three ODIs in India from January 11 to 17, and Allen's participation in the T20Is hinges on the Scorchers’ run in the BBL. Should they advance to the final on January 25, Allen may not be available until the fourth T20I on January 28.
Conversely, if they fail to qualify, Allen is anticipated to be present for the entire T20I series. “Pending selection, I’ll head straight to India once the Big Bash concludes for us,” Allen shared with ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday.
Allen is among five players who have secured casual agreements with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), allowing flexibility between national duties and franchise responsibilities. “Playing for New Zealand is still the pinnacle for me, and my passion lies in representing my country. However, cricket is clearly evolving year by year,” he remarked.
“New Zealand Cricket has been very accommodating in recent times. I’m optimistic about rejoining the Black Caps after the Big Bash and continuing from there,” he added.
Allen is poised to debut alongside Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh for the Scorchers, marking his return to competitive cricket after recovering from a foot stress fracture sustained during the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA in July.
In that tournament, his spectacular innings of 151 runs, which included a record-setting 19 sixes for the San Francisco Unicorns against Washington Freedom, left spectators amazed. Allen last represented New Zealand in March, scoring 27 runs off 12 balls in an eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in Wellington.
