New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) A specialized CBI court in Delhi has handed down a sentence of three years of rigorous imprisonment to a former Sub-Inspector of the Delhi Traffic Police in connection with a bribery scandal, officials reported on Monday.

The court found Jagmal Singh Deshwal guilty, who was serving as a Sub-Inspector and Zonal Officer (ZO) at the Nangloi Traffic Circle when the incident occurred. In addition to the prison sentence, the court also levied a fine of Rs 50,000 on the defendant.

As per the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case was initiated on February 8, 2022, following allegations that Deshwal had solicited illegal payments from a complainant to facilitate the movement of trucks through the area under his control.

Investigators revealed that Deshwal requested a bribe of Rs 24,000 from the complainant in return for granting permission for the trucks owned by the complainant to navigate through the traffic zone where he was stationed.

Acting upon the complaint, the CBI set up a sting operation, apprehending Deshwal in the act of demanding and receiving the bribe from the complainant.

The agency conducted a thorough investigation and subsequently filed a charge sheet against Deshwal on July 26, 2022.

During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including details from the sting operation and other materials collected throughout the investigation, to substantiate the charges against Deshwal.

After reviewing the arguments and evidence presented, the specialized CBI court concluded that the accused was guilty and convicted him under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court sentenced Deshwal to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000, officials confirmed.

This case highlights the CBI's ongoing commitment to combat corruption within public sectors and hold government officials accountable for their actions.

The agency has been actively investigating bribery and corruption cases across various departments, resulting in numerous arrests and prosecutions of officials who exploit their positions for personal gain.

Earlier this month, the CBI also detained one of its inspectors in Delhi for a bribery offense, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within its ranks.

Officials stated that the agency is dedicated to enforcing strict measures against corrupt practices, regardless of the accused’s rank or department, and continues to pursue investigations aimed at promoting transparency and integrity within government operations.

Point of View

This verdict represents a crucial step in the fight against corruption in public offices. The CBI's relentless pursuit of integrity within government ranks is commendable, as it reinforces the principle that no official is above the law.
