Rahul Gandhi Engages with Kerala Nurses: Addressing Healthcare Challenges
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, engaged with nurses from Kerala on Tuesday, emphasizing their pivotal role in the healthcare framework. He stated that their commitment, compassion, and empathy are crucial for families to feel secure when entrusting their loved ones to their care.
On the social media platform X, Gandhi expressed, “Nurses are integral to our healthcare system. Their unwavering commitment and empathy are what give families confidence when they entrust their loved ones to their care. The nurses from Kerala embody this spirit remarkably. I was honored to converse with a few of them recently. I am profoundly thankful for their invaluable contributions to our society and our nation.”
His comments were made during a video interaction with a group of nurses, where they discussed the pressing realities and challenges that healthcare workers face in India. The nurses brought attention to numerous systemic problems, such as time limitations, staffing deficits, and constrained opportunities for career advancement.
One nurse articulated that the demanding nature of their roles often leaves insufficient time for genuine patient interaction. “Understanding patients’ struggles is vital, yet our workload frequently prevents us from dedicating enough time to do so,” she remarked.
When asked about overseas opportunities, some nurses shared that although many prefer to stay in India, the improved working conditions and organized systems in countries like the UK are appealing. A nurse detailed that in the UK, longer yet continuous shifts and hourly pay structures offer better financial and professional security compared to the fragmented schedules in India.
Another nurse pointed out the scarcity of career advancement opportunities within India, noting that specialization often requires higher qualifications, such as a master’s degree, complicating progression.
Addressing key concerns within India’s healthcare system, nurses highlighted the significant shortage of personnel.
“The ratio is alarming. Approximately 20 nurses must care for nearly 100 patients,” one nurse noted, stressing the strain on resources.
Reflecting on their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses recounted stepping outside their typical responsibilities during crises. “We even conducted surgeries during COVID due to the overwhelming need. We never anticipated the situation would escalate to such extremes,” one nurse shared.
They also underscored the necessity of enhancing nursing education to foster growth within the profession in India. Celebrating the strengths of Kerala’s nursing community, participants credited quality education, diligence, and empathy as the cornerstones of their esteemed reputation.
