Is the Government Favoring Penguin Over Naravane?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) In the midst of a parliamentary impasse regarding the unpublished memoirs of former Army chief General M.M. Naravane, Rahul Gandhi intensified his criticism of the government and Penguin, the book's publisher. He asserted that the memoirs belong in the public domain and accused the BJP of trying to suppress the "inconvenient truth" from coming to light.
Speaking to the media after the House's adjournment on Tuesday, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed the book was accessible on the e-commerce site Amazon, a statement that Penguin has categorically denied.
Gandhi also presented reporters with a social media post from a former Army chief dating back to 2023, urging citizens to delve into the memoirs that recount the events of the Galwan clashes in 2020.
"Naravane tweeted in 2023. Just follow the link - happy reading, Jai Hind. Either Penguin or the former Army chief is lying; both cannot be right," Rahul Gandhi remarked to the press.
For over a week, the Lok Sabha has experienced continuous disruptions over General Naravane's book, with the opposition eager to address the "revelations" while the government remains steadfast in blocking discussions. The issue escalated further when Gandhi brandished a copy of the book outside the House on Monday, igniting fresh tensions and fierce confrontations between the government and the opposition.
Additionally, the Leader of Opposition reiterated his support for the former Army chief, questioning the government's priorities.
"I trust Naravane ji over Penguin. Would you believe Naravane instead of Penguin?" he challenged.
He claimed the book contains numerous uncomfortable truths that could embarrass the government, which is why it is preventing the opposition from exposing the realities of the Galwan stand-off in the House.
In response to the ongoing controversy, Penguin stated that no copies of the book have been "published, distributed, sold, or otherwise made available to the public" in any format.
"Penguin Random House India wishes to clarify that we hold exclusive publishing rights for the book 'Four Stars of Destiny', a memoir by General Manoj Mukund Naravane, former Chief of the Indian Army. We want to emphasize that the book has not been published," the company stated in an official announcement.
