Jaipur, Oct 1 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister and prominent Congress figure Ashok Gehlot visited a student from the NSUI who was hospitalized following injuries sustained during a police altercation on the Rajasthan University campus on Tuesday.
Gehlot vehemently criticized the recent violent events at the university, where RSS members reportedly conducted a 'Shastra Poojan' (weapon worship) ceremony on campus.
He raised concerns regarding the university administration's involvement and deemed the event a perilous precedent that contradicts the essence of educational institutions.
"It is utterly irresponsible and reprehensible for the university administration to permit a politically affiliated group like the RSS to hold a Shastra Poojan on campus," Gehlot stated.
"Universities should function as hubs of education, not arenas for political and ideological conflict," he asserted.
Gehlot accused the university authorities, including the Vice Chancellor, of yielding to pressure from the RSS, suggesting this incident indicates a troubling trend towards the saffronization of educational environments in the state.
"In the aftermath of the event, when NSUI members protested against the RSS activities, they faced violence. Multiple NSUI individuals, including State President Vinod Jakhar, were detained. Footage from the scene shows police officials engaging in the destruction of NSUI members' vehicles," Gehlot alleged.
"I have contacted the Jaipur Police Commissioner to express my profound dissatisfaction regarding this police misconduct," Gehlot mentioned. "I have urged for immediate measures to ensure the release of those wrongfully detained," he added.
Additionally, former CM Gehlot visited Ravindra Meghwal, a student severely injured in the clash, to assure him of support, including enhanced medical treatment.
He reiterated that utilizing campuses for promoting weapons and ideology-driven programs jeopardizes the academic atmosphere and sends a disconcerting message to the youth.
"This is not representative of the culture of Rajasthan. We will persist in voicing our opposition to such actions," Gehlot concluded.
