Gehlot Criticizes BJP for Halting Rajasthan's Cricket Stadium Project
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, March 28 (NationPress) With the commencement of IPL 2026 just around the corner, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, has unveiled the latest installment of his ongoing series ‘Intezaar Shastra’. This chapter critically examines the sports sector and launches a fierce critique against the BJP-led state government, accusing it of harboring an “anti-sports mindset”.
In this recent chapter, Gehlot draws attention to the halted construction of the proposed international cricket stadium located in Chomp village, near Jaipur. This stadium was envisioned to be the world’s third-largest with a capacity of 75,000 spectators.
According to a video shared on his X account, the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) currently lacks its own stadium and had plans for this significant project. Chomp village was selected as the site, and the foundation stone was laid on February 5, 2022, during the Congress administration, outlining a clear roadmap for completion in two phases. The first phase, which was supposed to accommodate 45,000 spectators, was slated for completion within 24 months, followed by the expansion to full capacity in the second phase. However, Gehlot claims that after 36 months, the project is still incomplete and shows no signs of progress.
“The world’s third-largest cricket stadium, intended to elevate Rajasthan’s status, has fallen prey to the negligence of the BJP government,” Gehlot stated.
“This situation illustrates an anti-sports mindset that is damaging the state’s image.” The ambitious project was meant to improve sports infrastructure and create opportunities for aspiring athletes. Gehlot emphasized, "An anti-sporting mindset tarnishes Rajasthan's reputation! The world's third-largest cricket stadium—planned for development in Chomp, Jaipur—has today succumbed to the inaction of the BJP administration.
The Congress government had initiated this international-standard stadium to enhance Rajasthan's prestige; while it was expected to be completed by 2024, it remains stalled even after 36 months! Furthermore, the RCA elections have not been conducted for two years. “Despite investing crores of rupees, the aspirations of our sportspersons have been sidelined,” he remarked.
In a pointed critique of the current administration, Gehlot urged the government to transcend political rivalries and prioritize the needs of athletes. “Put aside political hostility and stop jeopardizing the futures of our players,” he asserted.
Gehlot’s series, Intezaar Shastra, has been spotlighting delays and alleged inaction by the current government across various sectors, with this latest edition focusing on the critical issue of sports infrastructure and governance.
