Panaji, June 2 (NationPress) The Goa Congress has found itself at the center of a controversy after a poster unveiled during the Statehood Day celebrations omitted the image of party national president Mallikarjun Kharge.
This exclusion triggered a strong backlash from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Congress of ‘disrespecting and sidelining’ its Dalit leader.
The banner, displayed during a Congress-hosted event in Panaji on May 30 to celebrate Goa Statehood Day, prominently showcased images of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, state Congress president Amit Patkar, and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao -- but notably omitted Kharge.
Kharge was initially set to attend a public meeting in Navelim, South Goa, which was subsequently cancelled.
The Goa BJP took to social media, sharing the controversial banner on its official X handle and asserting that the incident was a calculated snub.
“Congress Humiliates Its Dalit President. Mallikarjun Kharge’s photo was intentionally excluded from Congress’s official Goa Statehood Day banner - does this reflect a snub to the party’s own national president?” the post asserted.
The BJP further contended that Congress has humiliated its Dalit president by leaving him out of the visual representation.
This development has ignited a new wave of political discord in the state of Goa.
The ruling party, BJP, is leveraging it to scrutinize Congress’ commitment to internal unity, which they often tout as their principle of inclusivity and representation.
Political analysts suggest that this incident could tarnish Congress' image, especially among Dalit voters, if not addressed promptly and carefully.
Meanwhile, Congress supporters argue that the BJP is capitalizing on a genuine oversight for political advantage.
Reports indicate that some Congress leaders in Goa have acknowledged this “minor mistake” as a result of what they termed oversight.
As the issue remains a topic of heated discussion, Congress is under pressure to reaffirm its dedication to inclusivity and organizational unity, according to political analysts.
