GOC-in-C Anindya Sengupta Updates CM Sukhu on Spiti Valley Airstrip Proposal

Shimla, April 19 (NationPress) The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-In-C) of Surya Command, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, met with the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on Saturday to address various topics, including the promotion of civil-military collaboration, advancements in strategic infrastructure, and the proposal for an airstrip in the scenic Spiti Valley.

This meeting emphasized the necessity of bolstering coordination between the Army and civil authorities, which is essential for effective management of security threats, disaster response, and regional development.

Considering the state's significant position, the Army is pivotal for border security and national defense operations.

Lt Gen Sengupta provided an update to the CM regarding the current security landscape and strategies to improve collaboration with local law enforcement.

The discussion also shed light on the Army's proactive involvement in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief initiatives, particularly referencing the Army's quick actions in Samej Khad, Rampur, which suffered severely from flash floods last year.

The Army's rapid response teams have played a crucial role in rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts during landslides, flash floods, and severe weather conditions.

Furthermore, Lt Gen Sengupta discussed programs initiated by the Army aimed at fostering socio-economic stability in remote regions through the promotion of border tourism and encouraging reverse migration.

The Army has pledged to provide comprehensive support in areas such as Giu, Khanadumti, Kaurik, Tashigang, Lepcha, Shipki La, and Komik, as stated by the Defence Wing.

These initiatives seek to rejuvenate border villages and integrate them more closely into the national framework. The meeting also brought attention to the proposal for a dual-use airstrip in Spiti Valley, which would enhance connectivity and boost tourism.

Additionally, the Army suggested creating an alternate access road, stairway, or ramp from the main highway to the Military Hospital in Shimla, making it easier for routine patients and for casualty evacuations during natural disasters.

CM Sukhu expressed gratitude for the Army's steadfast commitment to humanitarian efforts, recognizing their rapid and effective response as crucial support for civilians in emergencies.

The meeting also assessed significant road infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and strategic mobility. These routes are vital for both national defense and local development, as well as disaster response capabilities.
