Mohali (Punjab), Nov 3 (NationPress) Following India's remarkable achievement in clinching their first ICC Women’s World Cup title, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur has not only added a splendid chapter to India's cricket legacy but has also revitalized her elderly ailing grandmother's spirit. Her grandmother, a pivotal source of inspiration for Amanjot, has instilled in her the unwavering drive to succeed despite humble beginnings.
Amanjot's grandmother, Bhagwanti, has been bedridden since suffering a heart attack in September. Bhupinder Singh, Amanjot's father and a carpenter who handcrafted her first bat, expressed his joy on Monday, stating, "The news of India's triumph last night and Amanjot's stellar performance has breathed new life into my mother."
He shared with IANS that his 75-year-old mother had faced another hospitalization last week due to worsening health.
In response to the family’s request for her to stay home until the final match, doctors released her on November 1.
"Although my mother is bedridden, she is aware of her surroundings, and when we shared Amanjot’s magnificent win with her, she responded by opening her eyes," he recounted.
India triumphed over South Africa by 52 runs. At just 15, Amanjot began her cricket journey under coach Nagesh Gupta, with her father commuting her daily from Mohali, near Chandigarh, on a scooter.
Initially a bowler, she evolved into an all-rounder after her domestic cricket debut for Punjab in 2017-18, later playing for Chandigarh and eventually returning to Punjab in 2022-23.
Amanjot's decisive catch in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 final was pivotal for India.
Reflecting on his daughter's early struggles, Bhupinder Singh, who received a Mahindra Thar as a gift from Amanjot in 2023, noted that his mother has always been Amanjot's guiding star in her cricket journey.
"When Amanjot played street cricket with boys, my mother was there, offering encouragement and keeping a watchful eye on her. Before cricket, she also engaged in hockey, handball, and football," he stated. He added, "Had Amanjot missed the catch of the South African captain, the blame would have been solely hers had India lost. But that catch was monumental—an absolute game changer!"
He received a call from Amanjot around 1 p.m. Sunday-Monday night about the team's victory and mentioned she would return home in six to seven days. "India's win and my daughter’s extraordinary performance have inspired her bedridden grandmother to embrace life with renewed vigor, as she has always been the driving force behind Amanjot's success," Bhupinder Singh said, celebrating the victory in traditional Punjabi style.
