Guwahati, March 18 (NationPress) In response to the recent announcement by senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi to join the BJP, Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP, characterized this decision as a “personal choice”. He emphasized that the impending Assembly elections focus on liberating the state from “fear and mafiaraj” rather than on individual politicians.

During a press conference, Gogoi highlighted the significant opportunities the Congress had afforded Bordoloi in recent years. “Two years prior, he was given the opportunity to represent the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, and he currently serves as a Member of Parliament. This time, even a member of his family received a ticket to run in the Assembly elections,” Gogoi remarked.

“Regardless, he opted to align with the BJP. That is a decision he made personally,” he continued. Gogoi, however, downplayed the potential political repercussions of Bordoloi’s departure, insisting that the electoral contest in Assam extends beyond individual leaders.

“This election is not centered on any single individual. It is about liberating Assam from the grip of Himanta Biswa Sarma and dismantling the mafiaraj that has become entrenched under his governance,” he stated.

Gogoi claimed that the current atmosphere in the state is one of fear, with ordinary Assamese citizens actively seeking change. “Himanta Biswa Sarma has fostered a climate of fear among the populace. There is a pronounced desire among the people to escape this environment,” Gogoi asserted, expressing optimism about his party’s chances.

“We are receiving overwhelming support throughout Assam, and I am certain that Congress will emerge as the next governing party,” he concluded.

Addressing rumors that Bordoloi’s resignation stemmed from disputes over candidate selection for a specific Assembly seat, Gogoi dismissed such claims as baseless. “It cannot happen over a single seat. In every political party, there are differing views and strong opinions, but that alone cannot justify severing ties and joining a rival party,” he stated.

Although Bordoloi’s departure is perceived as a setback for the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections, the party leadership is committed to projecting unity and confidence.
