Patna, Jan 29 (NationPress) Tragically, four women hailing from Bihar's Gopalganj district lost their lives in a stampede that occurred during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj early on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place at Sangam Ghat during the Mauni Amavasya, a prominent day for holy bathing at the Mahakumbh Mela.

The victims, each from various villages in Gopalganj, have been named as Shivkali Devi (65), from Madanpur village under Barauli police station, Saraswati Devi (68), a resident of Ramnagar village under Bhore police station, Tara Devi (65) from Shyampur village, and Sushila Devi from Balesara village under Uchka police station.

As per Sangeeta Kumari, the daughter of Shivkali Devi, her mother attended the Mahakumbh to fulfill a long-held wish of taking a holy dip.

Unfortunately, while at Sangam Ghat, a sudden influx of people led to a stampede.

"After a group of sadhus passed, the crowd swelled quickly. People began to fall on one another, and my mother was caught in the chaos," Sangeeta recounted.

The news of Shivkali Devi's demise sent shockwaves through Madanpur, leaving the village engulfed in grief.

Her daughters-in-law were inconsolable, and many relatives gathered to support the bereaved family.

Saraswati Devi, who traveled to Prayagraj with her 14-year-old nephew and other relatives in a Bolero vehicle, also perished in the stampede.

Alongside Tara Devi, both sustained injuries while partaking in the Amrit Snan and ultimately succumbed to their wounds.

All the women embarked on this journey with a sense of devotion and enthusiasm, eager to partake in the sacred Maha Kumbh bath.

Despite their families' worries about the overwhelming crowds, their strong faith compelled them to join the pilgrimage.

This tragic event has plunged their families into profound sorrow, turning what should have been a spiritual experience into a haunting memory.

The postmortems of three of the deceased were carried out in Prayagraj, and their bodies were subsequently returned to their families.
