Is the Government Favoring IndiGo Instead of Regulating It?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) As extensive delays and cancellations severely disrupt IndiGo’s operations at key airports, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the central government on Monday, asserting that it is favoring the airline rather than enforcing regulations.
Her comments arise during a period when thousands of passengers are stranded nationwide due to significant network interruptions.
Chaturvedi stated, “Who will clarify the reasons? Those who never provided explanations will now attempt to justify why regulations were ignored. While other carriers adhered to the rules, why was IndiGo spared? The entire government seems aligned with IndiGo, as evidenced by their violations of existing regulations whenever flights were grounded or canceled. This has evidently been ongoing for a considerable time. What prompted the Civil Aviation Ministry to permit them to persist with these arbitrary actions? Why haven't DGCA officials been held responsible? Now, we only see a show-cause notice being issued…”
Supporting this criticism, Trinamool MP Kirti Azad launched an even more pointed attack on the airline, labeling it a “thief airline.” He remarked, “They impose charges on passengers for seats, food, water, and soon they might even charge for restroom access. Two years ago, it was recognized that pilots need adequate rest for passenger safety; neglecting the mandated 48-hour rest could lead to accidents. Yet, IndiGo disregarded this law as it has turned into a profit machine.”
“The government and DGCA must explain why this negligence was tolerated. With a 64 percent market share, IndiGo operates without consequence, while other airlines like Tata exercise caution due to grounded aircraft. IndiGo should face hefty fines immediately. Despite ticket caps of ₹15,000, they are charging ₹50,000–60,000. The airline exhibits no fear of the government, which acts more like a business promoter than a regulator,” he added.
Congress MP Jebi Mather also voiced concerns, describing the scenario as a nationwide crisis: “The IndiGo situation is disastrous; passengers across the country are struggling greatly. This matter should be resolved urgently…”
IndiGo, recognized as India’s largest carrier with over 60 percent market share, is currently grappling with severe operational issues due to crew shortages, flight duty time violations, and alleged over-scheduling despite concerns over staff fatigue.
The disruptions have resulted in numerous cancellations and exorbitant spot fares on several routes. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to the airline, but opposition figures argue that regulatory measures have been insufficient and delayed.
