New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) - The Indian government has mandated the suspension of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news channels during the operation named Operation Sindoor, aimed at preventing misleading and sensational reporting that could incite public panic, as stated by the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, in Parliament on Thursday.

“Several news channels were found to be airing exaggerated, sensationalized, and speculative reports during Operation Sindoor. Such actions are particularly concerning during crises, as they can induce panic among individuals with loved ones in affected regions,” the minister articulated in a written response to a Lok Sabha inquiry.

“As a precautionary step, the government has ordered the suspension of TRP reporting for news channels for a duration of four weeks. This decision has received broad acceptance among stakeholders, with no objections reported thus far,” he added.

Following the launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, a military initiative by India in retaliation for the murder of 26 tourists in Pahalgam, numerous Indian news channels were accused of rampant misreporting, sensationalism, and disseminating false information.

In their pursuit of higher TRP ratings, some channels broadcasted AI-generated visuals and video game clips, misrepresenting them as actual military operations. This intense competition for ratings led to a “report first, verify later” mentality among some journalists.

One prominent Hindi channel aired outdated, unrelated footage, including clips of the Israeli Iron Dome in action and airstrikes in Gaza, falsely portraying them as real-time Indian missile strikes against Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist positions in Pakistan.

Another channel misrepresented archival footage of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon as Pakistani missiles targeting Indian cities like Jalandhar during Operation Sindoor.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has since refuted many of these false claims.

Some channels were compelled to issue apologies for their significant errors in broadcasting misleading information.

Point of View

It is vital to recognize the government's proactive stance against sensationalism in media. The suspension of TRPs during Operation Sindoor reflects a necessary commitment to responsible journalism, especially during critical times when accurate reporting is paramount.
