The National Sports Governance Act, 2025 (25 of 2025) was published in the Official Gazette on August 18, 2025. According to section 1(2) of the Act, it specifies that the Act will be enforced on a date designated by the Central Government through a notification in the Official Gazette, allowing for different enforcement dates for various sections.
In accordance with the authority granted by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, the Central Government has set January 1, 2026, as the date when the provisions of sections 1 to 3, sub-sections (1), (2), and (4) of section 4, sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 5, sub-section (5) of section 8, sub-section (1) of section 11, sections 14 and 15, sub-sections (1) to (7) and (10) of section 17, sections 30 and 31, and sections 33 to 38 will take effect, as stated in a government release on Wednesday.
The provisions being activated pertain to the establishment and governance structure of National Sports Bodies, including the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations, and Regional Sports Federations. The provisions concerning the formation of the National Sports Board, compliance obligations for recognized sports entities, rights and responsibilities of these organizations, the establishment of the National Sports Tribunal, and the regulatory powers of the Central Government will also commence on January 1.
The staggered initiation of the Act is intended to facilitate a seamless transition to the new sports governance framework. This legislation aims to foster transparency, accountability, ethical practices, and effective governance in sports management, ensure the welfare of athletes, and provide efficient and timely resolution of disputes related to sports, in accordance with the Olympic Charter, Paralympic Charter, and global best practices.
Starting from January 1, 2026, the institutional mechanisms outlined in the activated provisions of the Act will become operational.
