Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 13 (NationPress) The government of Gujarat has allocated Rs 5.16 crore to 258 Gram Panchayats in 11 tribal districts as part of the ‘Repair and Maintenance Incentive and Award Scheme’. This initiative aims to enhance water supply management in rural regions, as announced by Water Supply Minister Ishwarsinh Patel on Friday.
Villages achieving over 70% on various performance metrics, such as water quality, complaint resolution, revenue collection, distribution efficiency, and operator management, have been granted an incentive of Rs 2 lakh each.
The awards pertain to the period from April 2025 to January 2026.
“This scheme is aligned with the state’s commitment to furthering the Jal Jeevan Mission, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to ensure every household has access to tap water. Special focus has been directed towards tribal villages to maximize their advantages from this mission,” Minister Patel remarked.
As per the minister's information, the highest number of villages acknowledged under this scheme is in Sabarkantha district with 57, followed by Tapi (52), Bharuch (27), Surat (25), Navsari (24), Valsad (20), Banaskantha (17), Dang (16), Aravalli (15), Dahod (3), and Panchmahal (2).
Minister Patel elaborated that rural internal water supply initiatives are executed by water committees on behalf of the Gram Panchayats, making effective management and maintenance crucial for ensuring a sustainable supply.
“To tackle complaints and enhance accountability, it is vital to foster a sense of ownership within the Panchayats regarding the management and operation of these schemes,” he stated.
The scheme operates across 53 Talukas in 14 tribal districts, with beneficiaries selected based on standardized criteria evaluated by district-level committees.
Applications are submitted by the Gram Panchayats and are reviewed for approval by district committees under the District Development Officer's supervision.
The sanctioning of incentive amounts is performed by the state-level committee and disbursed by the district Panchayats.
Minister Patel emphasized that this initiative has introduced a systematic framework for water supply management and revenue collection at the village level, which is expected to yield long-term advantages for both Panchayats and residents.
