Ahmedabad, March 11 (NationPress) Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has sanctioned redevelopment initiatives amounting to approximately ₹1,003 crore for Phase-2 of the Kharikat Canal Re-Development project in Ahmedabad.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will carry out redevelopment activities on the existing canal across five specific stretches. Stretch-1 will span from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium, Stretch-2 will extend from Vinzol Vahela to Ghodasar (Avkar Hall), Stretch-3 from Ghodasar (Avkar Hall) to Vatva Village, and Stretches 4 and 5 from Vatva Village back to S.P. Ring Road.
This project encompasses the construction of RCC stormwater box structures, roads, footpaths, retaining walls, water supply pipelines, irrigation facilities, stormwater extensions, and sewer systems.
The Kharikat Canal, built by the Irrigation Department, flows within the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
While Phase-1 addressed certain sections, Phase-2 will concentrate on the remaining open stretch of the canal, stretching from S.P. Ring Road through Muthiya Village to Naroda Crematorium, and from Vinzol Vahela via Ghodasar and Vatva back to S.P. Ring Road.
The rapid urban growth of Ahmedabad has resulted in escalating pollution and waste build-up in the canal due to unchecked solid waste disposal, presenting a public health risk.
Moreover, connectivity challenges for Town Planning (TP) areas adjacent to the canal have emerged as a significant issue.
In light of this, CM Bhupendra Patel has assigned the AMC the task of effectively managing the Kharikat Canal redevelopment to tackle these concerns.
In Phase-1, which covered a 12.75-km stretch from Naroda Crematorium to Vinzol Vahela, approximately 80 percent of the work has been completed.
The total budget for Phase-1 was ₹1,338 crore, with over ₹700 crore already utilized. With Phase-2, the remaining sections of the canal will be redeveloped across five distinct stretches, fully funded under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shehri Vikas Yojana (Golden Jubilee Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme).
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will supervise the implementation of this initiative, aiming for a more pristine and well-maintained canal that improves urban infrastructure, connectivity, and public health.
