Is Vigilance the Most Effective Weapon Against Cybercrime? Gujarat Minister Jitu Vaghani Thinks So
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Dec 31 (NationPress) Highlighting that vigilance serves as the most potent shield against cybercrimes, Gujarat's spokesperson minister Jitu Vaghani stated that the surge in digital connectivity has concurrently heightened the threat of cyber fraud, making it essential for the public to remain aware and cautious.
During a media briefing following a state cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Vaghani elaborated on the discussions surrounding cyber fraud. He urged citizens to stay alert, particularly during the festive and New Year seasons, to avoid falling victim to digital scams. The minister noted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the state’s cyber crime unit is operational 24/7 to safeguard citizens from various forms of cyber fraud. While the government employs technology to enhance public safety, he reiterated that individual caution is equally critical.
Vaghani advised individuals who may inadvertently become victims of cyber fraud to promptly file a complaint by calling the national cyber helpline at 1930, as immediate reporting can mitigate financial damage. He cautioned that dubious links circulating on platforms like WhatsApp, often masquerading as messages such as “check your special card in your name” or “click here to claim your free gift,” could be traps set by cybercriminals.
Residents have been urged to avoid clicking on any such links. The minister elaborated that engaging with unknown or dubious links may lead to downloading files infected with viruses, granting hackers full control over smartphones. This poses a significant risk to bank account information, OTPs, personal photographs, and sensitive data.
He encouraged the public to use social media judiciously, send greetings through simple text messages, images, or videos, refrain from clicking on suspicious links, avoid installing or updating third-party applications from unreliable sources, and abstain from downloading files from unfamiliar contacts. Reinforcing the government's commitment to cyber safety, Vaghani emphasized that public cooperation and awareness are vital for combatting cyber crimes in today’s digital landscape.
