Mumbai, Oct 16 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Minister for Information Technology Ashish Shelar emphasized on Thursday that understanding cyber security and enhancing digital literacy have evolved from being mere luxuries to essential requirements of our era.
He stated that both the government and citizens must remain informed about these critical issues.
Minister Shelar addressed attendees at a cyber security awareness workshop held in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre and the Directorate of Information Technology.
According to him, the digital revolution has significantly altered our everyday lives and the functioning of administrative duties.
“Every officer within the ministry operates on a digital platform. Hence, there exists a direct correlation between cyber security and our roles. The law is unforgiving of errors born from ignorance. Thus, it is vital to stay informed about cyber security,” he stated.
He highlighted that the cybersecurity initiative encourages individuals and organizations to adopt practices such as using robust passwords, activating multi-factor authentication, regularly updating software, being cautious of phishing attempts, encrypting sensitive data, and utilizing biometric security measures.
“India is at the forefront of the global digital transaction landscape today. Digital payments are widely embraced, making India the nation with the highest and most secure digital transactions. However, this progress has also led to an increase in the complexity and scale of cyber crimes,” the minister noted. He stressed the necessity of cultivating not just technical expertise but also an appropriate mindset to defend against cyber attacks.
Since 2016, the Maharashtra government has established a robust infrastructure for cyber security. The state is equipped with a 24/7 Command and Control Centre, a Cyber Helpline, and a mobile app. Furthermore, a 'Technology Assistant Investigation Unit' and an 'AI-based detection' system are operational. Maharashtra has also become the first state to set up a Computer Emergency Response Team,” Minister Shelar added.
He warned of the serious threats posed by deepfake technology.
“Deepfake can jeopardize not just professional but also personal and family lives. Therefore, it is essential for everyone to be vigilant and proactive in identifying and preventing it,” he mentioned.
Yashasvi Yadav, Additional Director General of Police for Maharashtra Cyber, noted that in today's digital age, while services are available at a click, a helpline has been established for citizens to access cyber assistance, ensuring police services are equally accessible.
Expert professionals and officers in the cyber domain provide immediate support via this helpline, utilizing advanced software.
“To boost the capability of the cyber department, helpline numbers 1930 and 1945 are now operational. The helpline number 1930 is designated for reporting cyber financial fraud, while 1945 is for filing FIRs and legal actions regarding financial frauds,” he explained, adding that citizens have received satisfactory services following effective investigations initiated from these calls.
Additionally, Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Deputy Director General at NIC Delhi, stated that the Government of India has delineated specific responsibilities for various departments concerning telecom network security and cybercrime to bolster national security.
