New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) The champions of the IPL 2022, Gujarat Titans (GT), have officially announced the appointment of former Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade as their assistant coach in anticipation of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Wade is set to join the coaching team alongside head coach Ashish Nehra, batting coach Parthiv Patel, and fellow assistant coaches Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi. Gujarat Titans expressed their enthusiasm on X, stating, "Champion. Fighter. Now our Assistant Coach! Welcome back to the GT Dugout, Matthew Wade!"
The 37-year-old was part of the victorious GT squad in 2022 under the leadership of Hardik Pandya and participated in three matches during the 2024 season. The Australian cricketer has played a total of 15 IPL matches and did not enter the IPL mega auction after retiring from international cricket.
Wade concluded a remarkable 13-year international career last October, having represented Australia over 200 times, primarily in the two white-ball formats. As a T20 World Cup 2021 champion, he has played 36 Test matches, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20Is for Australia, and he has also led the ODI and T20 teams.
The forthcoming IPL season is scheduled to commence on March 22, featuring the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders facing off against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the opening match. The Titans will commence their season against Punjab Kings at their home venue, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, on March 25.
In the previous mega auction, the Titans have assembled a robust 25-member squad, securing top talent such as South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, England's Jos Buttler, Indian pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Washington Sundar.
Retained players include Indian opener Shubman Gill, Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, Tamil Nadu's Sai Sudharsan, Haryana's Rahul Tewatia, and Tamil Nadu's Shahrukh Khan.
Last season, the Titans finished eighth out of ten teams after losing their initial captain, Hardik Pandya, to the Mumbai Indians.
