United Nations, Aug 8 (NationPress) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his disappointment regarding the tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump, which took effect on Thursday, as reported by his Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq.
Guterres has emphasized that he considers all trade wars to be detrimental and should be avoided at all costs, Haq stated on Thursday.
“This is disheartening news,” he added.
The Secretary-General is particularly concerned about the most impoverished individuals, who are likely to bear the brunt of these increased tariffs, Haq noted.
“He wishes to ensure that all governments acknowledge the necessity of taking measures to protect the poorest and most vulnerable sectors of society, who will undoubtedly suffer due to the increased prices,” Haq remarked.
A 25 percent tariff on most imports from India went into effect on Thursday, with an additional 25 percent expected next week as a punitive action for acquiring Russian oil.
According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), three developing nations will encounter tariffs exceeding 35 percent (two of which, Myanmar and Laos, belong to the least-developed category), eight will see tariffs surpassing 25 percent, ten will experience tariffs of over 18 percent, and 32 will face tariffs of 15 percent, as outlined in Trump's executive order.
The order specifies a 10 percent tariff on Brazil, yet Trump has imposed a punitive 40 percent tariff due to domestic political matters.
Additionally, Trump is set to eliminate, as of August 29, an exemption from tariffs for goods valued under $800 shipped individually.
India has labeled the tariffs as “extremely unfortunate” and criticized the imposition of additional tariffs on its goods for actions that other nations are also pursuing in their national interests.
