Jerusalem, Oct 28 (NationPress) Israel announced on Tuesday that the remains delivered by Hamas on Monday night were actually body parts of a hostage whose body had been retrieved by the Israeli army approximately two years ago.
According to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, Israel views the handover as "a clear violation" of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. A security meeting is scheduled for later on Tuesday with top defense officials to deliberate on Israel's potential response.
The remains were sent by Hamas through the Red Cross in Gaza overnight and subsequently transported to Tel Aviv for forensic identification.
Netanyahu's office confirmed that after the identification process, "the remains returned last night belong to the fallen hostage Ofir Tzarfati."
Tzarfati, aged 27, was abducted from the Nova music festival in southern Israel during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. His body was located by Israel in a military operation in December 2023, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Hamas delivered the coffin to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza, which then passed it to the Israeli military and the Shin Bet security agency within the enclave.
The coffin was then taken to the National Centre of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv.
A Hamas source indicated that the body was retrieved earlier in the day from the Al-Tuffah neighborhood in eastern Gaza City.
This incident marks the latest exchange of captives and remains under a ceasefire agreement. Hamas had previously returned 15 out of the 28 hostage bodies that Israel requested.
As part of the agreement, Hamas has released all 20 living Israeli hostages, while Israel has freed approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees.
