Jerusalem, Nov 3 (NationPress) On Sunday, Israel announced that it had obtained the remains of three hostages from Hamas located in Gaza, in accordance with the ongoing body exchange stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
The remains were delivered to Israeli forces within the Gaza Strip by the International Committee of the Red Cross and are set to be sent to the national forensic institute in Tel Aviv for identification, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
"Upon completion of the identification process, families will receive official notifications," the office remarked.
If verified, this would leave eight hostages' remains still in Gaza, out of 28 that Hamas committed to returning to Israel as part of the truce, in exchange for 360 bodies of Palestinian militants who perished in the conflict, as reported by Xinhua.
The Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas stated that the bodies were retrieved from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, situated east of Khan Younis. They identified one of the bodies as Colonel Asaf Hamami, an Israeli officer who lost his life during the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023, while defending Kibbutz Nirim.
In a separate communication, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem emphasized that the handover "is part of the movement's unwavering dedication to continuing the exchange process," urging mediators to "exert pressure on Israel to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip."
Despite the ceasefire that commenced over three weeks ago, Gaza health authorities report that at least 236 Palestinians have lost their lives and 600 sustained injuries due to Israeli fire since October 11. The total death toll from Israeli assaults since October 7, 2023, has reached 68,865.
