New Delhi/Chandigarh, Feb 7 (NationPress) Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep sorrow on Saturday regarding the unfortunate accident that occurred during the Surajkund Mela in Faridabad, which resulted in injuries to several individuals.
“I convey my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Furthermore, immediate instructions have been given to the appropriate authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for those injured,” Saini mentioned on X.
“The Haryana government is wholly devoted to providing swift and compassionate support to the injured and their families,” the Chief Minister asserted.
In response to this tragic event, Haryana Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma remarked, "There were 13 individuals seated on one side and another 13 on the opposite side. This is indeed a heartbreaking occurrence. The Chief Minister, along with the district administration, police, and mela officials, extends their sympathies to the bereaved families. Regrettably, one individual has lost their life in this incident..."
According to police reports, nearly a dozen individuals sustained injuries, with one in critical condition, when a Tsunami swing collapsed during the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Haryana's Faridabad on Saturday evening.
The swing malfunctioned, allegedly due to a mechanical failure, around 7 p.m. while approximately 15 patrons were enjoying the ride, as noted by the authorities.
Witnesses, including bystanders and rescue personnel, reported the tragic loss of life of Inspector Jagdish Prasad from Palwal, who was identified as a victim of the incident.
“The swing crashed to the ground with a deafening noise, sending a cloud of dust into the air, causing a panic as visitors mistakenly thought it was a terrorist attack,” stated a shocked attendee.
Immediately following the collapse, the entire mela grounds were cleared, and District Magistrate Ayush Sinha took charge of the rescue efforts, coordinating with various agencies to transport the injured to medical facilities.
Officials from the district administration, law enforcement, and the tourism department's managing director were also involved in the rescue measures.
A thorough investigation into the matter has been initiated, as confirmed by an official.
Earlier that day, strong winds had caused a gate structure near entrance number 2 to collapse, injuring a visitor who was subsequently taken to B.K. Hospital for medical attention.
The mela, which commenced on January 31, is scheduled to continue until February 15.
Last year, the event saw participation from 44 countries, and this year, it has exceeded expectations with over 50 nations involved.
With nearly 700 participants already on-site, the projected attendance is anticipated to surpass the 15 to 16 lakh mark observed in previous years.
