Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Sabarkantha, Gujarat, on December 24, an initiative was launched under the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) aimed at enhancing health awareness among adolescents.
As a part of this initiative, the 'Yuva Pahel' quizzes took place throughout the district, where peer educators teamed up with healthcare professionals. These peer educators were pivotal in raising awareness and encouraging adolescents to embrace healthier lifestyles.
Continuing efforts under the National Adolescent Health Programme aimed to educate teenagers about significant health-related topics and promote healthy behaviors.
One notable quiz was conducted at the Ayushman Arogya Mandir in Pethapur, featuring engaging rounds focused on yoga, nutrition, and healthy living.
Participants showcased their enthusiasm for the initiative.
Vishwa Parmar, a participant, remarked that the quiz significantly improved his confidence and understanding of health issues. "I am thrilled to have participated in this program. It has significantly boosted my self-esteem," he stated.
This program also trains peer educators to share essential information with their peers about nutrition, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, de-addiction, and the significance of a healthy lifestyle. Such an approach is anticipated to raise broad awareness and motivate responsible health choices among youth in the district.
Juhi Sharma, Community Health Officer at the District Panchayat of Sabarkantha, reported that the Yuva Pahel Quizzes were held at Ayushman Health Centres, sub-centres, and district-wide, covering 751 villages in Sabarkantha to maximize outreach.
Mehul Pandya, District Programme Coordinator, noted that the initiative aims to enhance the overall health and development of adolescents aged 10 to 19 years.
He emphasized that the program tackles issues like nutrition enhancement, prevention of anemia and malnutrition, mental health support, substance addiction prevention, safety from violence and accidents, and fostering positive behaviors and lifestyle changes.
According to him, the National Adolescent Health Programme has been effective in nurturing healthy and responsible citizens.
Launched on January 7, 2014, the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram is built on principles of adolescent participation and leadership, equity and inclusion, gender equality, and strategic partnerships across various sectors.
The program aims to empower adolescents across India to make informed and responsible health decisions by providing access to essential information, services, and support through Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics and community-level interventions.
